Day 11 - A show that disappointed you

Big Bang Theory - Everyone told me I'd love it. That it's about geeks. Hell, it has Wil Wheaton in it!! Unfortunately it also is insultinly steriotypical, has an obnoxious laugh track, and just failed to be actually funny.

Agility went better than expected yesterday, though it felt more like the Sunday of an agility trial (everyone was tired). I think it was a combination of the heat, and the fact tht we had a run on Friday.

We'll see how today goes!

Happy To Be Here
By Garrison Keillor

If you enjoy NPR's A Prairie Home Companion you'll enjoy this collection of short stories.

The Whiskey Rebels
By David Liss

Set shortly after the American Revolution, Washington is president, Hamilton has formed the Bank of the United States, and the nation is a fragile place. A wronged woman from the west and a disgraced intelligence officer work to shape the fate of the new nation each in their own way. This is a very well written book, though the story didn't really grab me until about half way though. That asks a lot since it is 525 pages long. But once it got going, I had trouble putting it down. If you have any interest at all in the early years of the USA then you'll enjoy this.

I'm currently reading The Phantom of the Opera and I'll be starting The Dunwich Horror after that - both on the Kindle.

Our dog club decided to try having a single CPE run tonight, and I think Lucy and I did pretty well out there.

Day 10 - A show you thought you would not like but ended up loving

As a nice followup to last nights viewing, I was skeptical of Project Runway as a concept. I didn’t see how they could really turn a show about people making clothing interesting. Boy was I wrong!

Busy busy day. Banking, and paperwork, and tonight an agility trial. It'll be just me and Lucy tonight, and only 1 run.

Day 09 - Best scene ever

TNG – The final scene of season 3, The Best of Both Worlds part 1 when Commander Riker orders Worf to fire on the Borg cube, the music crescendos, and the scene goes black.

DS9 – The destruction of the galaxy class USS Odyssey in the episode The Jem’Hadar. The intent was to show the audience that the best the Federation had couldn’t stand up to the might of the Dominion. To say that I was not prepared for that is a massive understatement. I was totally expecting the Odyssey to kick Dominion butt. I’m pretty sure I spent the remainder of the episode (credits included) wide eyed and slack jawed.

Just finished watching the 3rd episode of Project Runway. I should proably have put the chips in a bowl, rather thn eating them out of the bag.

I also updated my goodreads account for the first time since 2007.

Day 08 - A show everyone should watch

For Americans - The West Wing & Star Trek (all of them).

For international folks - Star Trek (all of them).

What? Like these answers come as a shock or something?

7pm and totally ready to call it a day. I had a headach for the better part of the afternoon, and no excedrin. And I just spent the last 30 minutes readng West Wing quotes.

Excuse me, I need to go get a dvd.

Day 07 - Least favorite episode of your favorite t.v show

Shades of Gray – it was the final episode of season 2. The writers strike was in full effect, they didn’t have anything to wrap the season up with, so they did a flashback episode. It was a total waste of an episode. Everyone would have been better off if they did a special with interviews and bloopers.

Tonight was puppy class. Alice is definitely showing improvement, even though her little brain gets such a workout during class. Lucy stayed home tonight, but don't worry. She'll get her fun at the agility trial this weekend!

And cause it's funny: Wil quits W00tstock.

Day 06 - Favorite episode of your favorite t.v show

Seeing as my favorite TV show is ST:TNG, my favorite episode would probably be Inner Light. Measure of a Man, Best of Both Worlds, and Yesterday's Enterprise are also at the top of that list.

Gearing up for school. I did the online intro course tonight, and I need to read the stuff for my class that starts next week. Plus I need to get my book for the class, unfortunately the silabus doesn't seem to want to be downloaded.

I should be more excited, but right now it just feels like one more hoop, and an expensive one at that. I know that having my graduate degree can't be a bad thing, but...

You know, I bet my general outlook on life would be immeasurably improved by cutting the humidity by 40% and the temperature by 20 degrees.

Day 05 - A show you hate

The Jerry Springer Show, or anything on Fox News that isn't actually news, and anything played in the waiting room of a car dealership/garage.

Took the girls to Calvert Cliffs State Park today. The rain held off till we were on our way back to the car, which was nice, but we didn't get to make it down to St. Mary's River Park. The cliffs are unfortunately off limits due to landslides, but it was still very cool. The temperature was nice too.

Day 04 - Your favourite show ever

Star Trek The Next Generation - this must come as a huge shock!

Today I:
Had eggs on toast while reading the paper for breakfast
Mowed the lawn
Went to the Montgomery County Fair

Had corn and a peach purchased at the fair for dinner
Completed my financial aid paperwork for grad school

And now I am going to play some Neverwinter Nights.

What could this be?

Holy Crap! It's Star Trek at the fair! )

Day 03 - Your favorite new show (aired this t.v season)

I’m going to say The Guild, because I only just watched it, and season 4 is new.

Last nights electoral judge training went pretty well. Driving through the storm wasn’t exactly fun, but I gave myself plenty of time. Since I arrived early, I relaxed in my car and read. The book I brought with me I’ve been reading for a while, and it took a bit to really get going. It’s well written, and I like the characters, but the story just didn’t seem to really take off until about half way through. I finished it tonight, and I'm starting The Phantom of the Opera on the kindle.

Anyway, the training itself went well. There were only a couple of new judges, so it moved right along. Even still I wasn’t out of there till just after 9pm.

It's been such a long week, I'm looking forward to relaxing this weekend. Of course by "relaxing" I mean taking the dogs to a new park, going to a county fair, finishing my financial aid info, and I probably should mow the lawn again. At least it isn't supposed to be hot.

Day 02 - A show that you wish more people were watching

I can see this meme is going to be a little more difficult for me, seeing that I don’t watch many tv shows now, and I don’t actually watch any of them via broadcast or cable. So the one I am watching, the day after it airs is Project Runway, so that’s my answer.

Last night, instead of being able to really celebrate Lucy’s adoption day, I had to go to new student orientation for grad school. It is remarkably similar to every other orientation I’ve attended. First I had to check in. Then I was supposed to sign up for a parking pass. I got to skip that line because Tigs got it last year. The next line was for my student ID. Long line, slow line, and in the tradition of bad ID pictures I had some hair sticking up. The photographer could have said something…. After that I got to sit with a bunch of other bored adult students for about a half an hour. Just waiting.

Eventually the various administrators shuffled onto the stage, a few of them wearing unfortunately too short skirts. They all introduced themselves, and then proceeded to spend the next hour reading us a power point presentation. Was there useful info in the powerpoint? Yes. Did I need it read to me? No. Two hours after arriving, I was on my way home, with a quick stop at the grocery store.

This morning was incredibly gray. The sky was uniformly gray, without any differences in color or texture. It was honestly a little weird. About half way through walking the dogs there was a brief flash of light. A little bit later there was another. 10 minutes later, as I was getting ready to leave the house the flashes were more frequent, and I could hear thunder. Probably due to the fact that I work to the east of where I live, I managed to avoid the rain, but only just.

Tonight I’ve got election judge training. I actually have to leave now, even though it isn't till 6:30 because it looks like I'll be driving right through another thunderstorm.

Day 01 - A show that should have never been canceled

Most of the people I know would say Firefly, and I agree with that 100%. But it isn’t the only show: Wonderfalls, Earth 2, American Gothic, Farscape, and Futurama are all on that list. These last two at least got some reprieve. Farscape got a movie, and Futurama got several movies and was just renewed.

Star Trek Enterprise was finally hitting its stride at the end of the 3rd season and all of the 4th season, even with its reduced budget for that last season. What Star Trek could really use, to be a really successful TV show, is the freedom to write interesting stories that can’t be found on broadcast TV or basic cable. Star Trek needs to be on AMC or HBO and to have the ability to tell stories the same way Mad Men or The Wire does.

Happy adoption day Lucymonster!

Oh Boy...

Time for the TV meme!

It's all written out, just waiting to be cut an pasted into semagic... Except I forgot to e-mail it to myself, and it's at work.

So the TV meme will begin tomorrow.

I haven't talked about it much, but I start grad school this fall. Orientation is tomorrow evening in fact. At this point I don't have any financial aid. For whatever reason the highly overwored financial aid department hasn't processed it yet. This is due in part because they didn't have my SSN. Not that I didn't give it to them, they just.... didn't enter it I guess.

Correcting that took about a week, once I realized the problem.

But then they typed it wrong.

Another week.

For the last two weeks it's been nearly impossible to get through to them on the phone. I was once put on hold for 28 and a half minutes before they decided to hang up on me because they had too many calls. Since then I mostly get a message saying they're too busy, try again later.

I plan on cornering people at the orientation till I get some answers. I'll let you know how it goes.

Tonight I'm taking Alice to agility class, while Tigs and Lucy are off to Soldiers Delight for a hike. It's kinda hot out, but Lucy has been grumpy from lack of personal attention.

This is it, the last question of the movie meme. Tomorrow I start the TV meme!!

Day 30 - Your favorite movie of all time

This question is really asking a lot. I mean, favorite movie of ALL TIME. That’s a heck of a title to add to something, really defining.

I’m going to have to go with Ghostbusters.

My favorite Star Trek movie would be IV: The Voyage Home (aka the one with the whales), with II and VI coming in a close #2 and #3.

The heat is back. It’s supposed to be 90+ degrees for the week. The whole week!

So like I said in my last entry, a group of us went down to Dulles Expo Center to check out the BrickFair Lego Fan Festival. It was really amazing what people can do with Lego’s. It was also amazing how many people were there. It was exhausting just being around that many people, especially when so many of them were over stimulated children.

Anyway, here are a few pictures of the even. Not shown are all the pictures of people hands pointing right in front of the camera and crooked out of focus pictures from being bumped into. Tigs got the brunt of that, in large part because we forgot to charge the small camera, so it died pretty early on.

I think my favorite thing from the Brickfair were all of the Ghostbusters Lego creations. Multiple Ecto-1s, Stay Puft Marshmallow Men, and the Ghostbusters themselves!

You can see more in my Brick Fair gallery.

Day 29 - A movie from your childhood

Back to the Future

I thought this was the most amazing movie with the best soundtrack ever when I was like 6.

Totally exhausted from the Brick Fair. Moree tomorrow.
archmage: (Dice)
Day 28 - Favorite movie from your favorite director

I don't think I have a favorite director. I don't pay that much attention generally. Most of them are pretty hit or miss anyway.

I'm pretty sure that the Orioles can't win if we're there watching. It was a pretty good game, there were a couple of calls that I call into question by the 2nd base umpire, and just enough rotten plays by the O's to give it to the White Sox.
archmage: (Cadfael)
Day 27 - A movie that you wish you had seen in theaters

I would have loved to have been able to see Star Wars A New Hope in the theater opening night.

I also think that Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan would look way more stunning on a movie screen than it does on my tv at home.

Last night Tigs and I went to Ikea to get a shelf for the living room to go by the front door. This one: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/10103088

While we were there we had Ikea dinner, which ended up costing less than 2 appetizers at just about any restaurant, and the quality was pretty good too.

Tonight's big plans are kicking back and watching Project Runway.

TGIF.

Recently we watched Get Smart, and I have to say I was disapointed. The show was a goofy, campy, spy spoof that didn't take itself at all seriously. The movie on the other handcouldn't seem to make up its mind whether it wanted to be a comedy or an action movie. Sadly, you should skip this one.
archmage: (Lucy & I reading)
Day 26 - A movie that you love but everyone else hates

Ok, I'm just gonna have to pass on this question. I can't think of a single movie that I love that at least one of my friends and loved ones don't also at least like. Sorry.

Thunderstorms rolled through last night. They were really stunning, brought some much needed rain, and a bit of a reprieve from the heat. Sadly that didn’t last. Today we’re in the mid 90’s and it feels like the mid 100’s. I am SO ready for autumn. We were supposed to get more rain today, but it looks like only to the south. :-(

On top of the heat, or perhaps because of it, everyone at work today seemed at least on edge, and too many were well over it.

Last evening we took the dogs over to Dogma and used their self serve dog wash to was both Alice and Lucy. We've never used it before, but it was so much easier than doing it in the shower at home. No crying, screaming, attempted suicide, and Lucy and Alice handled it pretty well too.
archmage: (Elephant)
Day 25 - The most hilarious movie you have ever seen

Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail

Star Trek IV is probably the funniest one of the bunch.

I overslept this morning. Not so much that I was late to work, but late enough that the morning was rushed, and I had to skip a few things that I generally do in the morning. Things like breakfast. Now, I don’t have breakfast every day, but a bit of oatmeal or toast with peanut butter, or even with honey (a touch of indulgence, I know) really makes the day start a whole lot better.

The worst part is that rushed feeling just stays with you all day.

There was a local political campaigner that came to our door just as we drove up this evening after an outing with the girls. He rang the doorbell just as we were getting out of the car. I yelled up to him "I'm sorry, but we're not home right now. If you'd like to leave a message, we'll get back to you at our earliest convenience."
